Joel Smith Bacon, Letters on the Arnold Case, 1847
Scope and Contents
This sub-series consists of assorted ledger sheets, correspondence, and publications by and related to Joel Smith Bacon. Of particular note are manuscript drafts and copies in Bacon's own hand of correspondence related to the 1847 expulsion of student Henry J. Arnold for attempting to assist an enslaved man owned by the college steward to file a lawsuit for his freedom. The subseries also includes correspondence related to the discovery, attempted publication and sale of the letters to George Washington University, some correspondence between Elmer Louis Kayser and Bacon's great granddaughter, and an 1865 flyer for the Fauquier Femal Institute of Warrenton, Virginia, which lists Bacon as the Principal and Prioprietor.
