Biographical/Historical Note
One of the first alumnae publications, the Mount Vernon Seminary Bulletin, was first printed in 1944 by the Alumnae Office at Mount Vernon Seminary. Throughout its fifty-nine years of existence, the publication underwent a number of name changes and was published by different offices. The original purpose of the publication was to “keep you in touch with large aspects of school and Alumnae affairs at Mount Vernon Seminary.” Even though the publication was originally meant to be a quarterly installment, it was only published bi-annually from 1948 to 1969. During that time, the name changed to The Bulletin of Mount Vernon Junior College and Seminary and Alumnae Association in 1960, and then to Mount Vernon Alumnae Bulletin in 1962. It was changed once again in 1971 to the Mount Vernon College Bulletin. During the early years of publication, the magazine was edited by the Alumnae Association, even though it was officially published by the Alumnae Office.
Throughout the 1970s the Bulletin was published more frequently in a newspaper format. Beginning in 1975 it was published every six weeks during the academic year, but by 1979 it was reduced to a quarterly basis. For the first time in 1982, the Office of Institutional Advancement began to publish the Bulletin: Mount Vernon College. The office continued to publish the Bulletin on an annual basis until 1993 when the Office of External Relations published the Spring issue. The Fall 1993 issue was published by the Office of College Relations. In 1994 the publication underwent a name change and was re-titled Mount Vernon College Today, which was published by the Office of Alumnae Affairs. The office of publication switched frequently in more recent years: Office of College Relations (1995), Office of Alumnae Affairs (Winter 1995-2000), Office of Development and Alumnae Relations (2001), Office of Advancement (2002-2003)m Office of Alumni Programs (2004), Division of Advancement (2005-2006), Division of Development and Alumni Relations (2008-Present). Mount Vernon Today continues as an online publication and the bi-annual publication is available online since 2005: http://mvtoday.gwu.edu/.
