Scope and Contents note

The Accounts/Administrative Division series contains materials created by the division. The files include annuity files, building files, the materials of the Office of DC Affairs, insurance policies, management surveys, meetings of the Departmental Secretaries, materials about the Nanjemoy property, tax information, retirement funds, and staff telephone directories.

These records provide excellent insight into many aspects of NEA Headquarters. The Building Files cover many of the aspects of the headquarters building including the funding, actual building and the dedication of the building. These files, along with the Evolution of Headquarters files trace the history of NEA headquarters between its historic houses.

The Office of DC Affairs files are located within this series and illustrate the close relationship NEA has had with the educational field in the District of Columbia. The files demonstrate the complex relationships the NEA has had with the University of the District of Columbia, Federal City College, and the DC Public School system amongst others.

Staff will remove any documents with social security numbers, employee numbers or other sensitive identifying information. After these documents are removed the folder will be available for research. In some cases, items may be photocopied and redacted. The redacted copy will then be placed in the publicly available folder. All other materials in a folder will be freely available for immediate use and will be marked as having been reviewed by Special Collections staff. After folders have been reviewed using these procedures and the confidential materials have been removed, the restriction shall be lifted.

Biographical/Historical note

The NEA’s Accounts division has its origins in the Division of Records and Accounts was established in 1917—one of the first divisions to be established. By 1945, the work load of the division was so great its two parts were split into their own divisions: the Division of Accounts and the Division of Records. The Division of Accounts represents the Treasurer of the NEA whose job is defined as managing all incoming and outgoing organization monies. The account division handles money entering the general fund as well as going to specific projects such as the Building Fund.
