Daniel Schwarz DC poetry oral history collection

 Collection
Identifier: MS2320

Scope and Contents

This collection contains oral histories with E. Ethelbert Miller, Kim Roberts, and Sarah Browning. The folders include the recording on CD and a printed transcript as well as a short biographical sheet. These oral histories were conducted between October - November 2012.

As a student in Professor Daniel Kerr’s Oral History class at American University, Daniel Schwarz decided to interview three poets who have made significant contributions to the DC-area poetry scene: Sarah Browning, E. Ethelbert Miller, and Kim Roberts. Over the course of these interviews, the poets describe the ways in which they have witnessed the local poetry scene evolve over time. They also examine the aspects of the DC-area poetry scene that distinguish it from other literary communities. Browning, Miller, and Roberts discuss the circumstances in their lives that motivated them to become poets, and share their opinions about the present state of poetry in DC and the nation, as well as the future of the medium.
