Scope and Contents

This collection contains 64 framed miniature paintings. The paintings are all portraits, some of recognizable historical figures such as Napoleon and Benjamin Franklin. The date range of these objects is unknown as none are dated, however biographical information on some of the painters indicates that the paintings were likely created between circa 1800 and 1875.

Biographical / Historical

Mary Louise Stevenson graduated from Mount Vernon Seminary in 1894. The Mount Vernon Seminary began in 1875 as a private high school and junior college for women, founded by Elizabeth J. Somers. The George Washington University initially affiliated with Mount Vernon College, and ultimately acquired the college's property and legacy in 1999. Mary Louise Stevenson attended Mount Vernon Seminary while it was located at the 1100 M Street campus.

Stevenson donated the miniature collection to Mount Vernon circa 1957. The paintings were displayed in two corner cabinets in the newly constructed Post Hall (completed in 1957) on the Foxhall Road campus. Stevenson also gave a collection of miniatures to the Chicago Art Institute in 1956 in memory of her father, who was on General Sheridan's staff during the Civil War.

Abstract

Mary Louise Stevenson graduated from Mount Vernon Seminary in 1894. She donated her miniatures collection to Mount Vernon circa 1957 where they were displayed in Post Hall on the Foxhall Road campus.
