Materials in this collection include photographs, paintings, and drawings of students, faculty, staff, trustees, and campus buildings. They range in date from 1860 to 1980, and were transferred to the University Archives by the Luther W. Brady Art Gallery.

Biographical / Historical

The Luther W. Brady Art Gallery, an educational gallery located on the second floor of the Media and Public Affairs Building, is the professional showcase for art at George Washington University. Opened in March of 2001, the Brady gallery features six to eight exhibitions each year and include University-related shows and Permanent Collection exhibitions with a focus on the Washington area. The gallery also administers the University's Permanent Collection, which includes paintings, sculptures, graphics, textiles, ceramics, historic furnishings, and photographs.

Collection includes 75 photographs and architectural drawings and paintings. The dates range from about 1860 to about 1980.


Organized into two series: Photographs; Architectural drawings and paintings. Separated by size. Oversize folders are in map case drawers, other smaller items are in Boxes 1-3. Within the boxes, items are organized by the original photograph #1, therby preserving the order orginally entered into the finding aid.

Separated Materials

Two images: graduating classes of 1868 and 1869 were removed from the collection due to excessive damage. Both images did provide identification of the people in the images.
