Social life and customs

Collection contains translations of German works, drafts of Litchfield's book The Franco-German War of 1870; unpublished works on the topics of European history, the U.S. presidents, religion, and other topics in English, German, French, and Italian; and journals dated 1864-70 and 1877-84 covering his extensive European travel, family matters, and social life. In addition, the collection contains a description, dated 1875, of Gracehill, the family home in Brooklyn, N.Y.

This artificial collection was created to manage documents that are too small to be separate collections of their own. Includes individual manuscripts, undated; Elbridge Colby's "The National Guard of the United States"; Book Arts Specimens; Performing Arts Material; Gay and lesbian publications; Washingtoniana publications; Washington associations, clubs, lodges, and societies, political documents as well as AIDS related content.

Johannes Adam Simon Oertel (1823-1909) an artist and Episcopal clergyman spend the last eighteen years of his life near Washington, D.C. painting and serving as assistant rector of the Church of the Incarnation, Washington, D.C. He had a studio in the Corcoran Building in Washington. He usually painted religious subjects. Collection contains a diary, newspaper articles, poems, letters, and images. The material dates from 1867-1909.

Collection includes correspondence, bills, receipts, lottery tickets, proclamations, testimonials, auction catalogue, newspapers, bonds, stock certificates, and checks. The material dates from 1786-1945. All of the material in this collection relates to prominent people and activities in Washington, D.C.
